Barnes-Jewish Hospital Campus Renewal
St. Louis, MO
Castle completed the $11 million design-build civil scope, supporting the construction of a $655 million 560,000-square-foot tower—a replacement for the demolished Queeny Tower—at the Barnes-Jewish Hospital campus. We executed a civil excavation and site utilities scope of work, including structure demolition, site clearing, earth moving, asphalt paving, concrete paving, site cast-in-place concrete, storm utility drainage piping, and subdrainage.
This site was exceptionally tight, located in an area with high foot and car traffic and bordered on all sides by buildings and roads. Surrounded by active roads, Castle’s project team managed extensive traffic control crews to complete mass excavation and hauling, ensuring maximum safety in and around the jobsite.
Evolving healthcare models prompted the demolition and replacement of Queeny Tower (est. 1965). The design of the new 10-story tower prioritizes private inpatient rooms, high efficiency, and comfort, meeting modern technological and care needs. Additional design elements include the tower sitting atop a six-story podium, a southern entry plaza, and further improvements such as enhanced open and public areas, patient/visitor parking, as well as arrival and departure.
