Castle is carrying out an $18 million earthwork contract, supporting the more than $500 million development of the Double Black Diamond photovoltaic tracking solar plant, a 600 MWac/775 MWdc Double Black Diamond, in Virden, IL. Our scope of work includes designing, then installing various roads, project entrances, and laydown yards, as well as performing mass grading for the 4,100-acre site. Castle’s work on Double Black Diamond contributes to providing enough emissions-free energy to power more than 100,000 households, yearly.  

In addition to the primary earthwork, we acquired a second contract, with Sargent Electric Company, to complete electrical trenching. With expert management, innovative design, and dedication to safety, Castle propels Double Black Diamond toward commercial operation, encompassing 1.6 million solar panels generating enough energy to offset nearly 70% of the City of Chicago’s electricity use from municipal operations.
